I'm wondering if anyone else out there ever had this experience. When my kids were in elem school and were learning how to subtract, I learned very early on that I needed to stay away from them if they needed help with doing their subtraction problems for homework because of the way we were taught to subtract at STS. I totally confused them. Thank God my wife learned to subtract the non-STS way. Let's say we want to subtract 39 from 57. So, we'd say 9 from 7 does not go, borrow the 1. Up to this point, my kids were fine. But, it's the "paying back" of that 1 (which is actually a 10) where the confusion comes in. So we'd say 9 from 17 is 8, pay back the 1. We were taught that when we pay back the 1, we should add it to the the 3 of the 39. And thus we would say" 3, pay back the 1 makes 4, and 4 from 5 is 1. Sure, both methods will give you the same answer (18), but I've had different math teachers who I've worked with over the years tell me that there's some kind of mathematical/logical flaw in the STS method. I remember Richie Henighan's dad, who was taught to subtract the non-STS way, was not happy with the way Richie was being taught to subtract at STS. I think he may even had a meeting with Mrs. Kenney, or whoever the teacher was, about it. Of course, as you might guess, nothing was going to change at STS. This is not an earth-shattering issue, but I was just wondering if any of you ever ran across this problem, especially when your own kids were young and learning how to subtract.

Bill Thank God my children never needed my help with any of their school work as they were not like me in school. My daughter was a math major in college and has her masters degree in business and 1 of my sons also has his masters in school administration and my other son has an associate and is a police officer in Nassau County and they made my life simple compared what I did to my Mother. Well we are getting down to the wire on this reunion and it is going to be great seeing everyone again

Bill - That's the difference in teachers and classes! I was not taught the same as you. I was taught if you borrowed from the 5, it reduced it to 4. Never did I have to pay back the 3. Amazing! Of course, I can't remember which grade we learned this. Was it second or first? I had Mrs. McCloud in second and Ann Richards in first.

Cathy, That's surprising that you guys in "the ones" were taught to subtract the right way, yet we "twos" learned some strange, unorthodox way. The unfortunate thing is that to this day, even though I understand how your way works (and is obviously superior to our way), I still can only subtract using the "wrong" method.

Bill,I'm so glad I didn't learn math your way. I have a minor in Statistics and am fairly good at twisting numbers to make them come out the way I need them to but, wow, I was happy to have mastered the borrowing of numbers but the paying back - wow - maybe you can pass that concept on to some of our politicians.

Bill, I just looked at the photos that you posted in Album 20. They're great but I remember Fr. Dermody being much older. I do have a question, though, the caption under Fr. Morrow says "Pastor of St. Teresa of the Child Jesus Church". Wasn't it St. Teresa of the Little Flower, or am I remembering it incorrectly.

Erma, Yeah, I noticed that "title" under Fr. Morrow's picture when I posted it to the photo gallery. I don't recall ever hearing St. Teresa's referred to as that. I remember hearing the term "Little Flower". In fact, I think "kids" who were about 8 to 10 years older than us (and probably even more than 10) used to write "Little Flower School" on their papers. I vaguely remember my sister (who is 8 years older than me) calling it "Little Flower School".

I remember the same as Erma, Little Flower but it is Little Flower of the Child Jesus. In fact, I think the placque in front of the church says Little Flower or at least it used to before Msgr. Finnerty's renovation. It seemed funny to see Fr. McLeod with dark hair. He, always, had pure white when we were in school. I agree with you Bill on the inside of the church, I miss it the Assumption of Mary was beautiful and the hanging lanterns were as well. Oh, well, I guess it's progress! Do you realize we sound just like our parents "When I was ......

My employees and I were all going out to dinner It was a set menu and when they decided what they wanted, they had to add 18% tax and gratuitiy. One of my staff came to me and said,"I have no idea how to do that." She was a young woman with two small children and a high school graduate. Here I was huddled over a counter in a school lunchroom teaching her how to figure it out. Learning never stops but I'm so glad we had a head start on others. GO ST. TERESA'S!

I just got email notification that Kathy Matthews posted a message on here, but unless my eyes have gotten a whole lot worse, I don't see it. Has anyone else posted a message that doesn't appear on here? It's been eerily quiet on the blog for the last week or so. Maybe people are conserving their "interpersonal energies" for the reunion, but I'm starting to wonder if our good old weebly website (which includes this blog) is working properly. If you did post a message and it didn't appear, shoot me an email and let me know.

To all who have added their memories to this Class of 1960, I have throughly enjoyed reliving all those memories with each and everyone of you. We have achieved a half century mark since graduation but on these pages we have returned to our childhood and become that young one once again. Aren't we lucky! A tremendous thanks to Bill Ryan for making this a reality and making this reunion possible and to all the efforts he put forth to contact almost 150 graduates. That's a true sign of a Woodsider! The celebration is about to begin! What a hell of a time it's going to be!

Noel (Skip), I am truly sorry to hear that you won't be able to join us. I will remember you in my prayers (see what a good STS person I've become, I still pray - guess some things stay with us forever) and hope you're feeling better. Enjoy that new baby. I have two grandchildren and they are precious at any age but the new ones seem to be especially precious gifts from God.

Taking the subway around NY has brought back great memories for me. Tomorrow afternoon I'll use it for a more utilitarian purpose: to get from Manhattan to Woodside. The fifteen cent token, long gone, has been replaced by the e-ticket. The look of the stations seems also to have been upgraded, but the "feel of the ride" remains unchanged.

Hi All - Just checked the blog and I do not know if this ever happened to anyone else or just me (the Luck of the Irish) but I reviewed Chapter 7 to catch up - wrote bunches & bunches and... it never appeared. I am NOT hallucinating, I really did spend like a half hour ... To the people I replied to in response to their comments & or questions, sorry about that. Look forward to seeing the brazen articles & bumps on the log tomorrow evening @ the K of C.

Well, it's come and gone and I'm pretty sure we all had a wonderful time. I can say I did and for one last time want to give Bill a huge thanks for doing an absolutely "bang-up", fabulous job. I can only speak for myself, but am willing to be, everyone feels pretty much the same - Bill, it was wonderful. It was a fabulous experience, everyone without exception was warm, welcoming and joyous being at the K of C with so many people who have such shared memories. Bill, thank you again. Class of '60 thank you for making April 24th one of the most wonderful days I've had in a long time; and thank you for another wonderful memory.

You're right Erma - a wonderful time was had by all! Only STS60 could gather together & pick up some long lost but avid friendships where we left off 50 years ago. There's no way we can thank you, Bill, for pulling off an "almost impossible to accomplish" feat! I hope you & Jean enjoyed yourself as much as we did. I'm no public speaker but Erma, you did SO well thank you! I also have a message to STS60 from Sister Ann Louise (I refer to her as SAL, but don't tell her) " Kathleen, please give ALL the children that graduated in 1960 my very best regards, NOT just the ones I had in class". She's 92 & remembers of STS kids by names. My son (32)went to STAC (St. Thomas Aquinas) down the road. We met up with her then & I've kept in touch with her since by mail & a few visits. Except for a hearing problem (speak clear & loud to her) she's doing well & recovered slowly but pretty well from a fall the end of last year. That's when she had to trade in her cane in for a walker but still gets around, just tires quite easily. FYI she lives @ the Dominican Convent in Sparkill (175 Route 340 - Sparkill NY 10976. Several of you asked for her contact info. I'm glad to forward it ~ it will make her so happy to know she is still remembered (as one of the few great nuns from STS). Wishing everyone a great week ahead - Thanks for the Memories! Kathy

I'm not going to do a formal "Thank You" right now since I'm at my son's house in Manheim, PA tonight. (We do the "walk-through" of the new house tomorrow at 10:00 a.m., and did not want to have to drive all the way up to Lewistown, and then to have to come back down here tomorrow a.m. So, I'm using webmail, and thus, do not have access to all my email addresses. But, let me at least informally thank all of you who attended the reunion last night. Unless I'm into some pretty heavy delusional thinking, my perception of the evening was that everybody had a great time. I know I did - even though I felt like the proverbial chicken running around with its head cut off for about 1/2 the evening.

Please send your pics from the reunion to [email protected] Many people have said that they are awaiting to see pics from the reunion on-line. I got the disposible camera pix developed and am in the process of uploading them and will shortly have (at least some of them) in a new gallery. My problem these days is time - we're getting down to the wire with the move. I think the rest of this week should be better than yesterday and today. Hopefully, I can get all the disposible camera pics into the gallery by the end of the week. I may not have all the captions in by then, but at least the pics will be there for the browsing. Anyway, send your pics - do it for Jane! What a bummer! To make you way to just a few blocks from the reunion, only to end up breaking your wrist! Not fair! Jane and a few other people (Dan Sullivan, Noel Sawyer, Greg Bayduss) could not make the reunion but I know they'd love to see the pics. Thanks.
