Happy 2013 to all our former classmates (or at least the blog readers)... Wrote in Dec but computer lost it; will try now. Thanks Bill Ryan for establishing this link of Woodside memories. Hope you and your bride are enjoying the little ones who I'm sure are growing up rapidly like my own. Skip, sorry I forgot (how could I) you were a Christmas Baby (Noel) so please accept belated bday wishes. Very sorry to lhear the diabetes is giving you a rought time; hopefully it will let up and 2013 will be more comfortable for you. Hope you & Melba enjoyed the visiting G-kids; they sure do keep days from being boring... Haven't seen anything out there for others that used to chime in.... Hope Pam and Erma are all doing well and the 44th St. crew from Sagon Hall. Why do they call these our Golden Years; I still can't figure that one out! Personally in this cold weather I don't feel golden; more like a rusty Tin Man but managing, tho at turtle speed. My LI family is 1/2 way thru restoring the Lindenhurst home post Sandy...electrical wiring is finally done. Let's hope the severe storms stay away from our east coast for a long time. Anyway.... keep the faith kids, stay warm, stay safe, stay well & stay postive thru 2013 at least!! Luv to all Kathy Matthews Klein

Frank - Someone had advised me before I retired (in 2002) that I shouldn't make any major decisions about what I wanted to do "with the rest of my life" until I had been retired for at least six months. I think that's good advice. It takes you at least six months to transition from a life where you were constantly busy to one where you basically get to manage your own time. After six months, if you find yourself getting bored, I'm sure there are lots of things you could get into, especially with your medical background. Who knows? Maybe you could organize a West Coast STS60 reunion! I'd be there!

Well done, Skip. A major "take-away" from your message is that when you retire, you fill up your life with as many activities as you are comfortable with. Some people have a strong need to keep very busy. Others, like me, seem to be able to drift along the River of Time without a paddle. But, we're as happy as those who need to kayak up that river, so to speak. When you retire, you decide how much and how hard you want to row on the River of Time.

Happy New Year, Everyone! I retired five years ago, after many years of teaching. I loved teaching and enjoyed my time in the classroom right up until my last day, and I now I love being retired. I have had no regrets, and I can honestly say I have not had a day of boredom. The best thing about retirement is that you have control over what you do with your time, not the other way around. You can do as much or as little as you want. Take the time, as Bill said, to figure out what will keep you active and happy.

Skip - I had the opportunity some years ago to be in an Episcopalian church during which time they held a benediction service (the kind that we used to have to go to every Wed. afternoon at 2pm while the public school kids were getting their religious instruction over in the school (i.e.,STS). The Episcopalian benediction service was virtually identical to our benediction service back at St. T's. Frankly, I'm a "severely" lapsed Catholic. Any time I've been at a Catholic Mass over the last 40 years or so (mainly funeral and nuptual masses), I just haven't been able to "relate". However, the 2 or 3 times in those 40+ years that I've been at an Episcopalian service, I felt much more "at home". I can understand the appeal of the Episcopal (aka Anglican) church to us folk who were raised Catholic.

An "STS"-er from another year just sent me notice that a former teacher at STS, Miss Murray, recently died. I don't think any of us from STS60 ever had her as a teacher, but I do remember how much the kids who did have her really liked her. I remember (at least in the early grades) how every September, I would hope to learn that Miss Murray was going to be my teacher for that year. That never happened. At any rate, I just thought I'd pass along the news about Miss Murray.

While you're out buying a St. Paddy's card for Frank, you may as well pick up an Easter card, too. And his b'day is in April, more towards the end of the month, if I remember correctly. (I'll check on that in early April and let you know). So, add a b'day card for Frank to your list, too. Here's Frank's address:

I just checked back on the blog (two "chapters" ago) and saw that his b'day is tomorrow, March 12. Sorry about that. I got him a b'day card last week when I was getting a St. Paddy's card to send to him. I'll address the b'day card today, but I'm sure it won't get there till several days from now. I'll just have to write "Belated Happy Birthday" on it. Sorry for the mix-up folks. His address is listed several entries above this one.

Hi Folks, I saw Frank yesterday. He is in good spirits. I rescued him from a preacher who was in the dayroom. He was thrilled to get out. He didn't know what the Reverand was saying but "he[s got too many words in his mouth and he won't stop till he gets them all out"He was still going when we rolled back in. I think he expected us to apoiogize for coming and going, but all he got was an "Habemus Papum!" and a smile. Don't worry about the timing of cards, time means nothing to Frank. But cards still impress the staff and that means everything for Frank.

Dick, I think "Habemus papam" trumps anything that reverend might have been saying. I mean, how often in your life can use that line? Perfect timing! And from Frank's observation about the reverend - that he has too many words in his mouth and he won't stop till he gets them all out - that would indicate to me that Frank has not lost that wonderful sense of humor he had when I knew him years ago.

Got word today from Maureen Mullany that one of our classmates, Maureen Thomas (Blankley) died last year. Maureen Mullany received a letter from Maureen Thomas's husband in which he said that Maureen died of cancer on May 25, 2012. Maureen T. was in my section from grades 1 thru 6; she lived in the Celtics. She is survived by her husband and one recently married son. Diana, So glad to see that you still have your wonderful sense of humor!. I love that story you just posted. Imagine Sr. Rosario asking anyone in this world if he or she has a problem with reality. Who was ever more removed from reality than that poor soul? Certainly by now, she's dead. Around the time of the reunion, somebody sent me a link to some website (about the Dominican sisters) in which they listed the names of all the deceased nuns. As far as I know, the only two nuns from our time at STS who are still alive are Sr. Ann Louise (who's in her 90s) and the nun who you and I had in 5th grade (and, unfortunately, all the boys had again in 8th grade) - that would be Sr. Ann Eileen. Anyway, back to your post....that is hilarious -- to hear that Sr. Rosario asked your mother if you had a problem with reality. That's beyond pure irony!

I was helping out at a blood drive yesterday in Lake Ariel PA for the Red Cross when I struck up a conversation with a donor. He mentioned he was from Queens and to make a long story short, he graduated Bryant '63. So did my husband but they don't know each other. Doug Carroll (the donor) said he married a girl who lived across the street from St. Teresa's. I can't remember her name but he said she was 1/4 Japanese. Ring a bell to anyone?

Hi, Pam, When you said that this guy (Doug Carroll) didn't know your husband from Bryant, that made me wonder. How big was the typical graduating class from Bryant back in the 60s? I went to Loughlin and there were 425 in my graduating class (1964). Maybe if your husband still has his yearbook, you could get an idea. I'm thinking Bryant must have been a pretty big school since their attendance area covered Woodside, Sunnyside, and a good chunk of Astoria. That would be a huge amount of kids, even taking into account the many kids who went to Catholic high schools.

Hi all. I'm not a grad from STS but really enjoy reading about your past memories in Woodside. I'm 53 and also from Woodside. I found your site after googling "broadstone" which was a pub my grandfather owned and where I spent much of my time as a child. His name was Larry Cobb. I seen that it was one of the bars that was mentioned in one of your posts in 2011 and I kept reading from there. I'm amazed to have found a reference to the Broadstone on the internet. I still have some memorabilia from the bar hanging in my garage. I had attended ps11, jhs 125, and grad from Aviation HS in 1979 then migrated to Cali in 1980. Take care and best wishes.

Hi, Larry, From the time I was about 10 until I was 20, I used to live on 42nd St., down near Laurel Hill Blvd. I frequently would walk down 42nd St, past the playground, and would see the Broadstone on the other side of Greenpoint Ave. It's all so long ago (I'm 67), but it seems to me that the Broadstone was in that location for a good number of years. In fact, the whole time I lived on 42nd St. (1956 to 1967), I'm pretty sure the Broadstone was there that whole time. If you belong to Facebook, put "Growing Up In Woodside, 1964-1980" in the search box. There's a fairly active discussion group in that Facebook "Group". It'd be worth a look for anyone who comes from Woodside.

I just did something that I haven't done in over a year. I went into the administrative part of this site to see how many people visit this site on a daily basis. Because of the very small number of comments posted, I thought the daily average of visits would be somewhere down around 5 to 10. Surprisingly, this site is still getting a good 40+ hits a day. One day in January, it got over 70 hits. Maybe if you posted a "howdy" message now and then when you visit this site -- who knows? -- you might start a trend, with more and more people stopping by to say "Hi" and even more. Give it a shot. It doesn't cost anything and your privacy is in no way jeopardized.

That's good to know, Dick. I'm glad our cards are having a positive effect on Frank and the level of care he receives. I can get an email reminder going for everybody re: Valentine's Day cards for Frank. If memory serves me correctly, I think his b'day is March 26. So, I'll combine St. Patrick's Day and b'day in one email blast. Considering Frank really has no family left that I know of (he was an only child), his old friends from STS and Woodside are probably the only ones left who can send him cards - which, as you say, seem to have a positive effect on the care he receives at the home. It's a little sad to think that that's the way these places operate, but that's the real world as it is. And you, Mr. Beyrer, are a good man, indeed, for visiting Frank on a regular basis. I know Maureen (Appell) Woods also visits Frank. Hats off to both of you!

Hello to all. my prayers and thoughts go with all of you. As our age moves up so does the chance of different problems. this has been a hard year spent to many weeks in the hospital, holding my own. My family and local friends have been at my side. I keep busy with my reading and antique hobby. A small town keeps you in thier thoughts all the time.

Just dropped by to check on STS60. Charlie, you're in my thoughts & prayers but know that you will lick this thanks to detection in the early stages!

Maureen, so sorry to hear about your Mom passing. Good to know that you had such a wonderful relationship with your Mom. My Dad passed in 1977 and Mom in 1997. Still miss them. Enjoy the changing season of the tundra.

Maureen, I also send my condolences to you and my prayers are with you and mom! And Charlie, you know that I am in your corner and will be asking the Blessed Mother for her blessings and guidance when I make my daily visit to her at this little grotto I have in the church in my neighborhood. Thank God you caught it early, and it sounds like everything is going in a positive fashion. I am in your corner #20 and will be focusing my positive thoughts on you!! God be with you!!

Thanks again, Bob. On Friday I completed my 32nd treatment of 48. Going every Monday to Friday & will finish on 6/30. All good and no big side affects. I am doing well all around. We have a nice family vacation planned for mid July after being in treatment since late April & many doctor appts prior to then. Regards to Andy and I hope all is fine by him. All thoughts and prayers are deeply appreciated. Power of prayer and positive attitude works. Take care, Charlie

Just heard that Mary Niebergall died. The details I got were pretty sketchy, but I got the impression that Mary died some time during the last few months - although she may have died as early as 2011. She was alive and seemingly well shortly before the reunion in 2010. I spoke to her on the phone. She was living in Florida at that time.

Bill, so sad but thanks for posting. I guess we are getting to that stage in our lives that we will start to hear this more and more. Charlie, keep up the good work. What you and your family are going through is very difficult but you are coming through it with grace and God's good help!

Maureen Murphy (Carlson) was kind enough to send me a link to Mary Niebergall's obituary notice in her (Mary's) local Florida newspaper. I lost all track of Mary after we graduated from STS, but as evidenced in the obit notice, it looks like Mary led quite a full life. RIP Mary. Here's the link:

Follow-up to previous posting: Some of the "nuts and bolts" procedures of this weebly site have changed since I first created it back in 2009. I used to know how to make links "hot". I tried doing so with the link to Mary Niebergall's obit notice, but no luck. You'll have to copy and paste the link. I tried that way, and it does work.

It's me again. I only check this site maybe 2 or 3 times a month, just to see if anybody has posted anything. As you can see by the posting dates above, postings don't come in all too often. However, since I had to go into the Edit part of the site just now, to see if I could make the link to Mary's obit notice hot, I checked the "Stats" part of the site. Jeez! I was surprised! People are still definitely visiting this site, even though very few of them post messages. For example, in the past month, the day with the most visits (aka "hits") was June 1st. 125 people visited the site that day. Not too shabby! And here I was thinking that this site was pretty much dead in the water.

I am one of those visitors "hit" the site, but don't always write a reply.... After reading that last entry by Bill, my Catholic guilt would not let exit the website without saying something. So here I am... first of all, in case you are wondering, that 7.9 Earthquake that hit Alaska the other day was no where near Bethel, Alaska, where I am. It was out on the very tip of the Aleutian Islands Chain. It was a BIG quake, but a very deep quake, so the tsunami warning was cancelled.

Hello all, 48th and final radiation treatment today. All good. 9 1/2 weeks went pretty fast. Doctor and staff at Sloan in Commack were terrific. After 2 months, they will do a PSA test. I am a happy camper. Thanks for the prayers and good wishes.

Sorry that i have not sent out a message. Health is holding but not good. We have the Grandkids for the summer to watch over me so Mel can continue her job. Cannot march in any of the parades due to legs being swollen, We have lost a few good friends in town lately. My son is my back bone and keeps me going, along with my Grandson who is at my call anytime he is with us.

My partner (of 25 years) and I just bought a condominium in Honolulu near Ala Moana shopping center. Not yet built, will be finished in 2016. I'm a dermatologist for 41 years, and so now running on empty-----retirement is in the works.

Part 3. Guess it's my ipad that keeps locking me out Ugh. The photo is on page one of their website. Www.sparkill.org. And I really don't think she looks very much different from when she taught our class in 1st grade. I certainly wish I aged as well as her...and her handwriting is still Ugh perfect as those posters over the chalkboard. Talk about perfectly legible script. Ugh I can hardly read back my quick notes sometimes. Gotta sign off now..keep the faith, keep smiling and stay safe and well. Love to all w fondest memories. Kathy Matthews Klein of 44th street. :)

Dear Kathy, l wonder if you are the daughter of Joe Matthews who emigrated from Dromcollogher, Co. Limerick, Ireland ? My father's brother was Joe and his daughter is Kathy Matthews Klein. My youngest brother, Frank, is married to Marion and they live on the farm in the home place. I have two other brothers, John and Gerard, and two sisters, Eilish and Rita. All are married with children. I have sixteen nieces and nephews. My eldest niece, Laura, who is in her twenties, got married before Christmas and my youngest niece, Blaithin, is fourteen. If my father, John, RIP, was your Dad's brother, then we are first cousins.

I just used my smart phone to check this blog. Hmm. I think I better start a new chapter. Using my desktop computer to scroll down to the 107th posting is no big deal. Takes a second or two to scroll down. However, on the smart phone, not so quick. So, put any new postings in Chapter 18. Thanks.
